The operation begins with the surgeon making an opening in the chest cavity, going through the protective bones to access the heart. Depending on what kind of corrective procedure is necessary the surgeon then proceeds to operate. 

Surgeons sometimes opt for different techniques of operation depending on a number of criteria; age, physical condition, deterioration of the heart and expenses. These include; open heart surgery, minimally invasive heart surgery, off-pump heart surgery and others.
